About Us :
The Institute for Economic and Social Development (IESD) established in January 1995 as a non-profit autonomous institution by a group of senior social scientists and policy analysts of Jharkhand. IESD envisions a society free from poverty and inequity. Its mission is to build a knowledge base and platform to facilitate an inclusive public policy regime. Towards this end, the Institute undertakes research, networking, advocacy and publications. The institute aims to contribute towards building a society that fosters and values an inclusive social and economic system that is free from poverty, deprivations and discontent. The institute undertakes academic research analysis and evaluation of developments programmes, organises discussion debates, seminars/workshops and publishes books, monographs as well as two journals.

» Aims and Objectives :
  • To undertake research in the area of rural development poverty, health, education, social production and social justice, gender, labour and other accepts of social development.
  • To formulate development policies and programmes.
  • To organise seminars, workshops and lectures on topics of contemporary relevance, to network with similar institutions/organisations for sharing ideas and information through collaboration.
  • To publish books, journals, reports, working paper and monographs on the issues mentioned above.

Activities of Institues :

» Research :

  • During its long existense, the institute has emerged as an important centre for studies on rural and agriculture development employment and social development. Its research work and publications have been favourably reviewed, both within Jharkhand and India. Several important regional and national organisations have jointly worked with or sponsored projects/studies at the institute . Some of these national level organisatison include various ministries of the Government of India such as those of Rural Development, Human Resource Development, Labour, Agriculture, Panchayati Raj, Minority Affairs, as well as other bodies such as the Planning Commission.

» Publication :
 
  • The institute publishes books, articles and reports on divergent themes and has an impressive catalogue. Most of these publications are based on the research work and seminar papers prepared by the institute. A number of other papers, working paper and advocacy booklets have also been released.
Books :
  • The institute has been publishing research based books. Some of the important book include Development, Displacement and Discontent. The forthcoming book is on globlization, labour market and employment.
Journals :
  • In 2005, IESD started publishing a research journals, Journal of Economic & Social Development (JESD), which is a peer-reviewed journal, published bi-annually. The journal has acquired worthy credentials in a short period and is indexed in the list of social science journal.
  • The institute has also been publishing a bi-annual regional research journal of social science Jharkhand Journal of Social Development .since 2009. Eminent scholars of the state of Jharkhand are associated with it.

Social Activities :
The institute also works as a presser group for social issues and is engaged in active research. It is also involved in the rehabilitation of socially neglected people of the society. Jharkhand Development Form is an organ of the institute engaged in social activities and action research in the state of Jharkhand.
» Networking :
  • The Institute networks with a large number of institutions, eminent academicians, practitioners and professional across india. Its close association with the Institute of Human Development, New Delhi has ensured continuous and strong linkage with economists, social scientists and academicians in various part of the country. The network has enabled the institute to undertake several in-depth-field-based studies in Jharkahand and certain other parts of the country,
  • The Institute has established regional centres at Loherdagga, Hazaribag, Chatra, Dumka, Sahebganj, Pakur, Chaibasa, Jamshedpur and Saraikela districts of Jharkhand to accord emphasis to its research on social development issues in the backward regions of the state of Jharkhand. Studies pertaining to tribals are the special focus of the institute.
» Teaching and Training :
  • The Institute regularly hosts training programmes for young researchers and students from Jharkhand and India, with a focus on empirical research. Further, in response to continual requests for skill development, reinforcement and training, the institute has undertaken several initiatives such as organising capacity building workshops and offering policy advisory services for the state goverment officials, development activities and social workers, Several of these workshops and training programmes have been organised in different parts in the state of Jharkhand.
  • In order to encourage promising reseachers, IESD plans annual internship opportunities to deserving candidates every year to work on research projects and field surveys.
